KARACHI, Pakistan — Thirteen people were killed after a passenger van overturned and caught fire on a street heading into Pakistan’s port city of Karachi overnight, authorities said Sunday.
The van dropped in a ditch after it had been struck by an item from a different automobile late Saturday night,” said Senior Motorway Police Officer Aftab Pathan.
He said the van was engulfed in flames following its gas tank leaked. Rescuers recovered 13 charred bodies, including three or more kids, while five people were pulled alive, such as a 1-year-old.
Officials said DNA tests could be required to determine the identity of their victims.
Such events are common in Pakistan where drivers disregard security criteria and violate traffic rules whereas renewing street conditions also leads to injuries.
