KYIV, Ukraine — President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus supposed his sixth term of office Wednesday through an inauguration ceremony which officials didn’t announce beforehand following weeks of mass protests from the authoritarian leader’s reelection, which resistance activists claim was rigged.
State news bureau Belta reported that the swearing-in service happened in the capital of Minsk using several hundred leading government officials, lawmakers, representatives of press organizations along with other notable figures current.
Lukashenko, 66, took an oath at Belarusian together with his right hand on the nation’s Constitution, along with also the head of the nation’s central election commission given him .the official ID card of the president of Belarus.
“The afternoon of imagining the post of the president would be that the day of our success, persuasive and fateful,” Lukashenko said in the service. “We weren’t only electing the president of this nation — we were defending our values, our serene life, sovereignty, and liberty.”
Lukashenko has conducted Belarus, an ex-Soviet state of 9.5 million, with an iron fist for 26 decades. Official results of the nation’s Aug. 9 presidential election had him winning 80 percent of their vote. His strongest competition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, obtained 10%.
Tsikhanouskaya, who’s in exile after being forced to leave Belarus, hasn’t accepted the results of the election as legitimate. Neither have the thousands of her fans that lasted demanding Lukashenko’s resignation during over six months of mass protests.
America and the European Union have contested the election and criticized that the brutal police crackdown on peaceful protesters through the first couple of days of demonstrations.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius is known as Wednesday’s inauguration service” such a farce.”
Forged inauguration. The former president of Belarus will not become much less former. Quite the opposite. His illegitimacy is true with all the consequences this entails,” Linkevicius mentioned on Twitter.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, known as the simple fact that the service was ready in secrecy”very telling”
“Even following this ceremony today, Mr. Lukashenko can’t assert democratic legitimization, which is the requirement to comprehend him as the president of Belarus,” Seibert said Wednesday.
Protests demanding Lukashenko to resign have rocked the nation daily because of the month’s election, together with the biggest rallies in Minsk bringing around 200,000 people.
Many protesters died, and over 7,000 were arrested.
The timing and location of this inauguration ceremony weren’t publicized beforehand. Law enforcement officers blocked off fundamental regions of Minsk on Wednesday morning and general public transport services were also suspended.
Even the Viasna human rights group said a few protesters were arrested close to the Palace of Independence, in which the service occurred, holding banners stating”The king has no clothes” and”The success (will belong to) the folks.”
Alexander Klaskousky, an independent Minsk-based analyst, said the secrecy surrounding the president’s inauguration exemplified that the danger the continuing unrest presents to Lukashenko’s grasp on power.
“The key inauguration exemplifies the amount of confidence of the pioneer in the official outcome of the election and at the people. Individuals who legitimately got 80 percent of those votes do not behave like this,” Klaskousky explained.
Lukashenko has bristled at ideas of dialog with the resistance. Amid global outrage, Belarusian police switched into prosecuting top activists and mass detentions, preventing large scale violence.
Many members of the Coordination Council which was shaped by the resistance to push for a glimpse of power have been detained or forced to depart the country.
A notable Coordination Council member, Pavel Latushko, compared the inauguration into a”collecting of thieves” and refused to comprehend Lukashenko since the president of Belarus.
An unfortunate mistake of background and a disgrace of the civilized universe,” Latushko said on the messaging program Telegram. We urge every person to participate in indefinite civil disobedience!”
