NEW YORK — The huge debate — the one between Alec Baldwin and Jim Carrey — was a winner at the ratings.
“Saturday Night Live” scored its main season premiere viewers in four decades and next best in 12 decades, highlighting the value of the presidential elections period to the NBC comedy series.
Its”chilly open” featured Baldwin, portraying President Donald Trump, satirizing a week’s debate performance. Carrey surfaced along with his impersonation of Democratic rival Joe Biden.
Throughout a hectic week for sports and news, “Saturday Night Live” was the most-watched amusement show, despite beginning at 11:35 p.m. about the East Coast, the Nielsen company stated. It had been shown live across the nation, which meant it aired during prime time in the West.
Together with 8.24 million viewers, it had been the 2nd most-watched”SNL” episode because May 2017, with the exception being last December’s successful return of Eddie Murphy.
It was also a return to the recognizable New York studio to the comedy series, which did a couple of distant episodes last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The powerful ratings gleaned some demanding reviews. “The Late Shift” writer Bill Carter called it a”standout — maybe not in a fantastic way” for a few thickly flat skits.
“We had’Saturday Night Live’ to rise to the event for this particular instance, and it did not,” agreed Eric Deggans, critic for National Public Radio. “Let us hope the country’s firehose of information will slow a little, and the series will have the time to catch its breath and increase its game”
NBC has been the most-watched broadcast community a week, averaging 5.5 million viewers in prime time. Fox 3.9 million viewers, ABC’s 3.8 million, CBS’d 2.7 million, Univision’d 1.14 million, Ion Television had 1.11 million and Telemundo had 1 million.
ESPN’s 3.9 million, CNN had 2.85 million, MSNBC had 2.8 million and HGTV’d 1.16 million.
