Suicide bomber kills 9 in checkpoint in south Afghanistan

Omer Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor in Helmand, said Thursday a little child and three security personnel were injured in the late Wednesday night assault in Nahri Sarah district.

Zwak stated civilians were at a car passing by once the attacker targeted the checkpoint. Two girls were among those murdered.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the assault, however, Taliban insurgents are responsible for the majority of the portion of Helmand province.

The violence comes as Taliban leaders and Afghan government-appointed negotiators are holding historical peace talks in Qatar, a Mideast nation where the Taliban set up a political division after they had been toppled from power from the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan. The discussions, which began earlier this month, are all supposed to end the fighting and set a roadmap to get a postwar society.
